Hyundai Mobis Unveils Innovative Mobion Concept Based on Ioniq 5, Showcasing Advanced Mobility

Hyundai Mobis Unveils Innovative Mobion Concept Based on Ioniq 5, Showcasing Advanced Mobility

For those who find the conventional notions of forward and reverse mundane, Hyundai Mobis introduces the revolutionary Mobion concept at CES, derived from the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Setting itself apart with a distinct design featuring updated bumpers and lighting units, the Mobion concept offers more than just aesthetic appeal. The innovative lighting units serve a dual purpose, not only enhancing the vehicle's appearance but also conveying vital information to pedestrians and fellow drivers.

The rear lights, for instance, have the capability to alert other road users to the presence of a pedestrian in a crosswalk, even if they are not visually discernible. Adding to its repertoire, the concept incorporates a groundbreaking ground projection system, illuminating the vehicle's direction on the ground using lights spanning a 360-degree spectrum. This system can go further, projecting crosswalk stripes to guide pedestrians.

Beyond the captivating lighting features, the Mobion concept takes center stage to unveil the next-generation e-Corner System by Hyundai Mobis. While specific details remain undisclosed, the system seamlessly integrates an electric motor with steering, braking, and suspension functions, empowering each wheel to operate independently.

The concept goes beyond conventional movements, featuring wheels that can rotate, enabling the Mobion to pivot, drive diagonally, move sideways, and even execute a 360-degree spin. The groundbreaking design is not just a spectacle; it serves as a testament to the evolution of mobility solutions.

Complementing these features, the Mobion concept incorporates two short-distance lidar sensors near the headlights and a long-distance lidar sensor embedded in the front fascia. Hyundai Mobis emphasizes the value of this configuration in lateral movement and the effective recognition of nearby objects, particularly during maneuvers like diagonal lane changes.

In a statement, Hyundai Mobis Vice President Lee Seung-Hwan expressed that the Mobion concept embodies their core technologies, ready for immediate mass production. The unveiling at CES marks a significant step forward in showcasing Hyundai Mobis' commitment to advancing mobility solutions and redefining the future of transportation.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Already Imagined With N Attire

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Already Imagined With N Attire

Hyundai hasn’t even properly revealed the fourth-generation Santa Fe – you’ll have to wait until February 21 - and yet already someone has decided to imagine a performance version of the overhauled seven-seat SUV. The South Korean marque is just getting started with its go-faster N models by kicking things off with the i30 N that was followed shortly by the Veloster N. Recent spy shots have shown the more stylish i30 Fastback will also get the full-on N treatment, but will there ever be an N-branded SUV?

The answer would have to be yes as N division boss Albert Biermann revealed back in October last year there are plans for N versions of the Kona and the Tucson. That being said, these are not a priority at the moment, which means the hotter derivatives are unlikely to come out in the foreseeable future. As for a Santa Fe N, it’s too soon to say whether it will get the proverbial green light, but we wouldn’t hold our breath since Hyundai has bigger fish to fry.

Even if it won’t get the stamp of approval, it’s interesting to see how the revamped midsize SUV would look in the full N attire, with a slightly more aggressive body finished in the now familiar Performance Blue with contrasting red accents. Bigger wheels, enlarged brakes, and a lowered ride height have all been neatly integrated into this speculative render showing what probably won’t ever happen.

Should Hyundai surprise us and come out with a Santa Fe N, it will certainly need more than the 275 horsepower available in the current N models taking into account the SUV is going to be much heavier than the hatchbacks. It is believed the engineers are working on a new Theta III gasoline engine that will produce as much as 350 hp, so that would be a suitable candidate to propel the amped-up Santa Fe.

On a related note, Hyundai South Korea has released a teaser video previewing the Safe Exist Assist system of the new Santa Fe:
