There were two glaring omissions from the last generation of Porsche’s 911 GT3 RS. One: a manual gearbox. Two: a big sticker to show everyone you owned the hardest, fastest naturally-aspirated track-orientated 911. This new Gen 2 991 GT3 RS has fixed one of those things.

Before the purists get all excited about the new variant following in the footsteps of its standard GT3 brother and reverting back to the ol’ three pedals and a gear lever, the new RS remains a strict PDK only car. But there’s now a sticker set as standard. And who doesn’t love stickers?



As you can see, it’s very much a soft facelift to see the RS out until the brand-brand new 911 comes along later this year. Considering the old car was staring down the barrel of perfection, it’s not like much needed to be done anyway.

Still, Porsche’s motorsport arm – the obsessives who fight for every tenth of a second – have squeezed the engine just that little bit more. Power from the sensational 4.0-litre, naturally aspirated flat-six engine is now up from 492bhp to 520bhp thanks to a raised rev limit of 9,000rpm. As we know from the GT3, a 9,000rpm rev limit is pretty much perfection.



Thanks to that extra poke and new specialist tyres, a tenth has been shaved off the GT3 RS’s 0-62mph time - now 3.2 seconds – though the top speed stays at 193mph.

There’s a new bumper and a few aerodynamic tweaks to aid grip, which – considering the old one had 80 per cent of the downforce of a GT3 Cup racing car – means it should be mighty through the corners. You also get racy solid ball joints on each suspension arm, plus new lightweight wheels: 20s at the front, 21s at the back.



Like all GT3 RS models, you get plenty of expensive lightweight goodies such as carbon body panels, plastic windows, a new lightweight engine lid and a magnesium roof (just to save 1.1kg high up on the car). Inside, you still have the full carbon bucket seats from the 918, door handles made in a textiles class and a liberal attitude to sound insulation.



For the more committed apex enthusiasts among you, we’d recommend selecting the ‘Clubsport package’ box for no extra cost. As on all of Porsche’s GT cars, said pack equips your RS with some scaffolding in the back just in case you put it on its roof, a fire extinguisher, and prep for a battery disconnect switch and a six-point harness. Serious stuff.

2018 Porsche 911 GT3 RS arrives as extreme finale for 991 era

Porsche Motorsport has unveiled the second generation of 911 GT3 RS to be based on the extant 991 platform.


The car is likely to be the last 991-based model to be launched before a new 911, codenamed 992, arrives on the world stage in September.

Available to order now at a price of £141,346, with first UK deliveries in June, the new 911 GT3 RS receives an additional 20bhp from a lightly modified version of Porsche’s race-bred 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine, increasing its power to 513bhp at 8250rpm.

This is the highest power figure yet for a naturally aspirated 911 and serves to distance the new 911 GT3 RS from the standard 911 GT3, which was equipped with the same 493bhp engine as the first-generation 911 GT3 RS when it was updated last year.

The internals of the new engine remain unchanged, the additional power coming instead from new intake and exhaust systems, coupled with changes to Porsche’s DME (Digital Motor Electronics) engine management.



Porsche motorsport guru Andreas Preuninger confirmed to Autocar that the engine actually develops more power than is claimed and could have been homologated at 523bhp, but they decided to err on the side of caution. In racing trim, if allowed to run without air restrictors, the engine could make more than 600bhp.

Like the previous 911 GT3 RS, the engine is mated to a seven-speed PDK double-clutch transmission and there is no option of a manual gearbox. The increase in power is claimed to shave 0.1sec from the outgoing 911 GT3 RS’s 0-62mph time, lowering it to 3.2sec, while adding 1mph to its top speed at 194mph.

Modifications to the car’s chassis were informed by the knowledge gleaned from the GT2 RS, launched last year. The new GT3 RS has the same spring rates front and rear as its turbocharged stablemate. At the front, those spring rates amount to double that seen on either the current 911 GT3 or previous GT3 RS, and the rear spring rate has increased by 40%. Like the 911 GT2 RS, rose joints are used throughout the front and rear suspension and the rear-wheel steering system has been extensively reprogrammed.



All GT3 RSs are fitted with carbonfibre front wings and bonnet (with new NACA ducts to aid brake cooling) and a magnesium roof. Cars with the optional Weissach Pack come with carbonfibre roofs and the option of magnesium wheels. Buyers who specify the full pack will save 29kg.

Visually, the new Porsche road racer is differentiated from its predecessor by a series of subtle aerodynamic and styling upgrades. They include new LED indicator lamps set within a re-profiled front bumper. The bumper also features new vertical air flow guides within the outer ducts to more efficiently channel air to the front-mounted radiators and brakes. At the rear, there are more heavily structured rear lights, a new bumper with larger air extraction ducts and modified supports for the rear wing, which itself features newly shaped end plates.



The interior has carbonfibre-backed racing seats, lightweight door panels with storage nets and nylon opening loops. Other weight-slashing measures include a reduction in sound absorption material and a lightweight engine lid.

These modifications to the 911 GT3 RS should add up to an approximate 10sec improvement in Nรผrburgring lap time.

The reason the new GT3 RS is being rolled out after the GT2 RS rather than before it (which would seem more logical and follow the template set by the previous GT2 RS in 2010) is that Porsche was not prepared to wait until this spring to wrest the Nรผrburgring production car lap record back from in-house rival Lamborghini, so launched its most extreme model first.

Porsche’s own numbers put the Exclusive ahead of the regular Turbo S by only 0.3 second to 124 mph, and the claimed top speed is identical at 205 mph. The company says that zero to 60 mph comes up in 2.8 seconds using the standard Sport Chrono package’s launch control, matching Porsche’s claim for the standard Turbo S; we’ve recorded 2.6 for that model. These aren’t differences that make themselves evident in your daily commute.
