2024 Toyota GR Yaris Enhancements: 8-Speed Auto, Increased Power, and Rally-Inspired Cabin

The much-anticipated updated Toyota GR Yaris has finally made its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon, surprising enthusiasts with not only a newly available automatic transmission but also a range of unexpected exterior and interior changes.

The headline feature is undoubtedly the introduction of an eight-speed automatic transmission. Similar to Hyundai's approach with the i30 N, the GR Yaris initially hit the market exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox, but Toyota has responded to demand by adding an optional eight-speed automatic to the lineup. Unlike Hyundai's dual-clutch system, Toyota opted for a new single-clutch unit named the Direct Automatic Transmission.

Equipped with the automatic transmission, the GR Yaris includes a dedicated cooler, and plastic paddle shifters are mounted behind the steering wheel for a sporty touch. Although the automatic transmission adds 40 lbs (18 kg) to the GR Yaris, it is expected to enhance the car's acceleration capabilities. The true measure of its driving enjoyment in comparison to the six-speed manual will only be known after getting behind the wheel.

Toyota didn't stop there; the 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine of the GR Yaris received a series of modifications. The automaker increased the direct injection pressure, incorporated a new intake air pressure sensor, introduced lightweight pistons, and added a different intake air pressure sensor. The Japanese models now boast 224 kW at 6,500 rpm and 400 Nm (of torque between 3,250 and 4,600 rpm, showcasing substantial improvements over the original 200 kW and 370 Nm .

The exterior design of the GR Yaris received thoughtful updates. A new bumper with distinctive air intakes graces the front end, while the rear features different LED taillights with an integrated light bar—a common trend in modern cars.

Inside, although the GR Yaris was already well-appointed, Toyota introduced a refreshed interior. The standout change is the new driver-focused dashboard panel housing the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster also found in the GR Corolla. The infotainment display has been repositioned and tilted 15 degrees towards the driver. Inspired by rally design, Toyota moved the hazard light and start/stop switch to be easily accessible when wearing a seat harness. Additionally, the driver's seat now sits 25 mm (1 inch) lower than before, enhancing the car's sporty feel.

These updates make the 2024 Toyota GR Yaris an even more compelling and versatile hot hatch, catering to a broader range of enthusiasts with its improved transmission options, increased power, and rally-inspired cabin design.
